How This San Diego Solopreneur Went from “Side Hustler” to CEO

Rolando Berring is an Impact Lab entrepreneur whose designs — and passion— make him stand out from the crowd.

He’s the owner and designer behind Berrprintz, a custom Etsy shop that offers printed t-shirts, hoodies, backpacks, hats and more.

There are a lot of graphic tee companies out there, but Rolando created his shop with a unique long-term goal in mind: Someday, he wants to create an organization that helps teach young people about life and business.

And while he started his shop as a side-hustle to help pay the bills, he eventually wants to quit his corporate nine-to-five and pursue his creative dream full-time.

The Problem

Rolando joined us in the Impact Lab wanting to earn enough to cover his monthly bills, quit his full-time job, and achieve financial freedom through his business.

However, he didn’t have a system in place to assess which products were most profitable, and he didn’t have solid strategies for pricing, estimating sales volume or finding the sales channels that would help him achieve his goals.

Where mission edge came in

As part of our Impact Lab program, we paired Rolando with Patrick, one of our fractional CFOs (aka seasoned finance expert).

He helped him take an in-depth look at the nuts and bolts of his business and strengthen its foundation.

Patrick was able to help Rolando identify his best-selling products. Together, they also identified his most loyal customers, then reached out to them to ask what other products they would like to see from his store.

After working through pricing strategy together, Patrick helped Rolando crunch the numbers for his own business. They calculated the cost of goods sold, profit margins,  and units he would need to sell in order to reach his goal income.

Finally, they discussed sales channels and developed a financial model in Excel Ronaldo could use to track his costs, including merchant fees, packaging and shipping.

The solution

As a result of his time in the Impact Lab, Rolando has a better understanding of the financial side of his business – a huge step in taking ownership as an entrepreneur (and a *huge* hurdle we see lots of solopreneurs face).

He now has a business bank account and a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) scorecard to track his progress.

Best of all, he came away from the program with a strong foundation for growth and success in the future, getting him one step closer to his dream of teaching young people how to follow in his entrepreneur footsteps.

You can see results, too

Rolando's journey highlights the importance of having a clear vision and a plan to achieve your goals.

Once he was able to identify and break down his roadblocks, Rolando opened up opportunities for financial success — not only for himself, but for his family and community.

Do you want to get clear on your goals and reach them?

There’s no time like the present to get started.
