This San Diego Baker Is Embracing Tradition As She Invests in the Future

Here at the Impact Lab, work is so rewarding when we get to help our clients turn their passions into successful businesses.

When we worked with Amaya Ford-Marrs to help bolster her baked goods catering business, the outcomes were especially sweet.

Amaya started Mya’s Catering Company in 2018 as a way to honor her grandfather, Manuel Cass Sr., and his love of tradition and family. Amaya’s baked goods, including cakes, cookies and cupcakes, are nostalgically delicious, with love baked into every bite.

Amaya wanted to create generational wealth for her daughter through her catering business. To earn more revenue, she needed to increase her customer base.

She came into the Impact Lab with the goal of improving her pricing and overall accounting structures for a more financially sustainable business model.

One of our team’s CFOs, Carolynn Duncan, worked with Amaya to conduct an in-depth review of her current accounting practices and offered some suggestions for how to improve them. After crunching the numbers, Amaya realized she was underpricing her products, especially given the time and attention given to each one.

She determined she needed to raise her prices in order to continue to best serve her customers and her employees. She also tried out new strategies for generating sales and projecting revenue through 2024. Following the price increase Amaya really began to think more about her financials.

Her biggest takeaways from the program included not only a clearer financial vision, but also increased confidence in herself and her business.

As she continues to invest in her own livelihood and her daughter’s future, Amaya remains committed to honoring the traditional recipes that remind her of her love for baking.

We’re so proud of how Amaya has stayed true to her passions, and we’re cheering her on as she creates a plan to keep her business around for years to come.
