When Small-Business Finances Feel like a Different Language

How Mission Edge helped this entrepreneur translate her bottleneck to a growing business

when small business finances feel like a different language

Laura Valdés is a big believer in the value of language access.

She’s the founder of Valdés Language Services, where she provides interpretation, translation and language services to ensure that Limited English Proficiency speakers can access the same services that native English speakers can.

When Laura started working with us, she had 13 years of experience, but many questions about how to make future growth financially possible. Namely, she needed help improving her marketing content, website and LinkedIn presence.

The Problem

Like many of the entrepreneurs we work with, finance-related matters caused a bottleneck in the growth of Laura’s business.

As she gained new clientele, she started offering retainer packages, but hadn’t figured out exactly how to price them.

She also wanted some guidance on closing deals and hiring contract labor, as well as whether equipment rentals could be a viable offering for her business.

Where mission edge came in

We paired Laura with one of our finance experts, Carolynn, to help her address some of the question marks she had about the services she offered.

As part of the financial modeling exercise, they worked through the pros and cons of equipment rental for her business, and they also addressed her other finance-related concerns.

Finally, Carolynn helped Laura improve her marketing content on LinkedIn and her website, so she could confidently share her services with her target audience.

The solution

After her time working with Mission Edge, Laura gained clarity around how to make running her business sustainable, including paying herself fairly.

She also had a clear plan for hiring contractors and growing her business, and was able to pursue equipment rental sales as an extra stream of revenue.

Most of all, she came away with confidence that the content and services she provided were valuable to her target audience.
