How often do you lose yourself in thoughts about your organization’s impact over the next decade?

Perhaps you find yourself clicking your pen at your desk, or on a long walk during the lunch hour, dreaming about what could be – if only you had access to the right resources.

This is exactly where Diana Ross found herself back in 2014 as the Executive Director of Mid-City CAN, a community-based organization in City Heights dedicated to police accountability, improving local transportation, advocating for juvenile justice and building community power.

Diana Ross dreamed of making even more of a difference through MCC. But the organization needed help creating a bridge between its existing impact and its full potential.

That’s where our Fiscal Sponsorship program came in.

WHAT THEY NEEDED

When MCC first came to us over nine years ago, it was an easy partnership from the get-go. They were looking for a partner that would allow them to grow in the ways they needed, while we sought to empower a growing, impactful community-based organization. MCC transferred to Mission Edge from a different fiscal sponsor, so they also needed a financial partner to help them meet their goals: something we were well-poised to do.

Where mission edge came in

We partnered with Mid-City CAN as a comprehensive fiscal sponsorship partner by providing them with a variety of services including Accounting, Human Resources and a 501(c)(3) structure to operate within.

In doing so, we helped MCC continue to grow autonomously while still taking advantage of our resources and expertise.

The solution

Over our nine-year partnership, we’ve been able to empower Mid-City CAN to focus on its mission and development efforts and secure federal funding for their program.

All of these efforts paid off when they were able to launch their own independent 501(c)(3) organization.

within Mission Edge’s infrastructure, Mid-City CAN had access to more funding

By operating within Mission Edge’s infrastructure, Mid-City CAN had access to more funding, which allowed them to hire more employees, increase their community impact and ultimately change more lives.

Just in 2022, here are some of the results that Mid-City CAN saw:

  • After more than 10 years of advocating, a Youth Opportunity Pass program was piloted in San Diego, providing free public transportation to all youth under 18.

  • More than 2,000 residents committed to get out and vote.

  • More than 300 families attended a free family snow day event.

  • After 4 years of advocacy, the Commission on Police Practices was created and included 2 youth seats, giving youth a voice on policing matters.
